AMHA members, we’re pleased to share some big news for U18 hockey this season.

The Don Johnson Hockey League (DJHL) has approved a two-year pilot project introducing association-based U18A, U18B, and U18C teams. The goal is to give players a more structured, competitive league while they continue representing their home association.

What’s changing:

  • Each division plays a 20-game regular season followed by playoffs
  • Teams are finalized by October 1, 2026, through each association’s tryout process (9 forwards, 6 defencemen, 2 goaltenders per team)
  • Players on a DJHL U18 team won’t be eligible to also play in the Metro Club Hockey League (MCHL), though an exception may apply for U18C goaltenders
  • Players can still suit up for their high school teams
  • Games are three 10-minute periods and non-contact

Attendance matters:

Players need to attend at least 70% of regular-season games to qualify for DJHL playoffs and Hockey NL Provincials. Attendance is tracked through the electronic game scoring system, and DJHL scheduling will be coordinated with high school hockey to reduce conflicts.

As a pilot, feedback will be gathered over the two years to help shape the league’s future direction.
